Scottsdale.com: Where to Play Mahjong in Scottsdale as The Mahj Clubs Expands Across the Valley

The Mahj Clubs Scottsdale clubhouse with automatic mahjong tables, as featured on Scottsdale.com

Scottsdale.com featured Julia Zastrow, founder of The Mahj Clubs, in a story on the membership-based mahjong club’s plans to grow beyond its Scottsdale clubhouse with more locations across metro Phoenix. For anyone looking to learn American mahjong or find a regular game in Scottsdale, her message was clear: the game brings people to the table, and the friendships keep them coming back.

Written by Scottsdale.com editor-in-chief Michelle Glicksman, the story traces how The Mahj Clubs, formerly Phoenix Mahjong Club, grew from mahjong nights in members’ homes into a 2,600-square-foot clubhouse near Scottsdale Fashion Square. Since opening in January 2026, the clubhouse has drawn 150 members and hundreds of guests each month.

Zastrow is now working with JLL associate Case Montanile to scout retail spaces of about 2,000 square feet around the Valley, with a longer-term eye on Southern California and Las Vegas. The Scottsdale clubhouse has 13 automatic mahjong tables, seating for up to 80 players, a lounge and a boutique of mahjong-themed gifts.

Beginners are welcome. Scottsdale.com notes lessons start at $50 per person, while nonmember open play, drop-in sessions and catered socials start at $40. Membership options include an unlimited Mahj-Pro membership, a six-month seasonal membership and a monthly membership, and members will be able to use them at future locations.

The story also points to mahjong’s growing popularity, citing a 4,467% jump in Yelp searches for mah jongg clubs in 2025.

“We started with a simple belief: mahjong is an excuse to gather, but connection is the reason people come back.”Julia Zastrow, founder, in the Scottsdale.com story
